Beautiful. It reminds me of some geometric arabic designs.

Thank you very much! Yes, the designs are evocative of Islamic mosaic patterns, although the latter are often far more intricate. There are structural considerations to be made with these double-walled vessels, because the clay (especially porcelain) becomes pyroplastic at high fire (cone 10, approx. 2380 F or 1300 C).

However, the similarity to Islamic tilings is simply a consequence of their shared basis in mathematics--in particular, the geometry of planar tessellations. My designs are sketched on gridded paper, from which coordinates and equations are derived. These are then entered into a computer program, which tiles the design so that it will fit on the curved surface of the vessel.

You may get a sense of what I am describing by looking at the scraps section.

Nice attention to detail. You've got some interesting designs in your gallery.

this gorgeous!
the geometric patterns are very arabic. i love that delicate shade of green. this piece is very modern and eye-catching. i like it alot :)
:iconlocnguyendao:
Wow thats very nice. How did you get those patterns on it without it collapsing?
:iconpetertwang:
Thanks...the clay is carved at a "leatherhard" stage while the piece is upside down. Working from the footring to the rim allows me to pierce the vessel without collapsing it. As for warpage during firing, the design has to be engineered to withstand the high temperatures. Some clay bodies are able to stand up to the heat, while the more vitrified porcelains get pretty close to slumping.

amazing carving work! reminds me of M.C. Escher's "impossible triangle" design

linked to you in his journal and I have to agree, you are amazing! I've never seen pottery like this. Many people would love to have this piece grace their home: I'm sure you have a rewarding career ahead of you, if you don't already. :+fav:
